Post Graduate Research Student Conference 2024
When: 23rd – 24th January 2023, Where: UHI Orkney & Online, Theme: Elements
The student conference takes place every two years and this will be the first opportunity to connect with fellow Post-graduate students to network, share good-practice, swap ideas and discover each other's research interests.
The next UHI Post-Graduate Research Conference will be the 23 & 24 January 2024, at UHI Orkney.
The event is open to all university post-graduate students, including those in the early stages of their research, have recently graduated or simply interested in developing their own research activity, and postgraduate (research) students. The gives students an active chance to:
- Attend plenary presentations on regional, national and international 'hot' research issues
- Showcase your research with presentations, poster presentations and interactive sessions
- Learn about, and engage with, the university’s research clusters and Green Network
- Receive updates on the latest research developments across the university in a unique island context
- Network with and meet colleagues from across the university and beyond
- Attend information and training workshops and sessions
- Discover tools to help your research and research practices
This event has been designed in a hybrid format allowing staff and students to attend virtually, in person or a combination of both.
Call for Papers
We look forward to receiving submissions for presentation at the UHI PGR Conference in January 2024 via video conference or in person, at Orkney College, East Road, Kirkwall, Orkney on the 23rd and 24th of January 2024.
This interdisciplinary conference will showcase the diverse work of postgraduate students from across UHI, giving the chance to showcase ongoing research across different fields. The conference will also feature poster presentations.
The theme for the conference is: Elements.
For inspiration an element might be:
A component, constituent, part, section, portion, piece or segment. A paragraph, sentence or word. A trace, touch, hint or smattering. The rudiments of a subject: the basics, essentials, the principles or foundations. A smaller cohort of a larger group. A substance, modern or ancient matter: earth, wind, water and fire. Chemical elements of the periodic table. The weather. The climate. Being in one’s favoured environment, familiar territory milieu, sphere, field or domain. The human body is made up of elements, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, but is this what makes up a human? Or, is it more about their stories, their lives, their experiences?
Potential areas of study include, but are not limited to: sustainability, history, archaeology, and the social sciences.
We invite submissions in the following types:
- 5 min introductory papers (for students in their first year of research)
- 10 min research papers
- Posters (hosted digitally or in-person) - overview of research question (QR)
Submission of abstracts will close at 5pm on the 31st October 2023.

There will be support with costs for travel and accommodation for UHI students. More details to follow. If you want to extend your stay here are some suggestions.
By plane:
If you are coming by plane, the easiest way to get to Orkney is by making your connection through either Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Inverness. From these airports, there are direct flights to Kirkwall with LoganAir. This airline collaborates with British Airways, so you can get a through ticket with them.
By railway, bus or car and ferry:
If you are coming over land, then make your way to either Aberdeen – from where you can get the Northlink ferry – or you can make your way to Caithness, where you can get the other Northlink ferry from Scabster, or Pentland Ferries from Gills Bay (takes about one hour).

Hotels in Kirkwall
Albert Hotel is located in the centre of Kirkwall, off the main shopping street. Single rooms from £95 including breakfast.
Ayre Hotel is located in the centre of Kirkwall near the harbour and the Peedie Sea. Standard single en-suite rooms range from £77.00 to £90.00 including breakfast.
Kirkwall Hotel: Located in the centre of Kirkwall at the harbour where the fishing boats come in. Single Room from £80.00 inclusive of breakfast.
The Shore: This hotel is near the centre of Kirkwall with a view of the marina. Single rooms from £73 including breakfast.
The Storehouse Restaurant with Rooms: In the centre of Kirkwall with luxury accommodation. Single rooms from £120 including breakfast.
Hostel accommodation
The Peedie Hostel is a nice, small hostel located next to the Ayre Hotel by the Peedie Sea near the centre of Kirkwall. Single rooms from £20 per night, dormitory beds £15.
Orcades Hostel is a pleasant hostel located near the Pickaquoy Centre, 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Kirkwall. Single rooms from £40. Bed in 4-bed room £20. Tel (+44) (0)1856 873 745.
