Professor Derek McGhee
Dean of Research and Innovation
Professor Derek McGhee works closely with academic partners, deans, research leaders, and professional services colleagues to shape and deliver UHI’s research and innovation strategy. He also oversees preparations for the university’s REF submission.
Before joining UHI, Professor McGhee served as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Stirling, where he played a key role in advancing the university's research agenda. He has also held prominent academic leadership roles at the University of Southampton and Keele University, demonstrating his deep expertise as a researcher and leader.
Professor McGhee began his academic journey in the Department of Sociology at the University of Plymouth, followed by an MA in Cultural Studies and a PhD in Sociology at Lancaster University. His teaching and research interests span sociology, criminology, and social policy.
Derek is the author of four influential research monographs, including *Homosexuality, Law and Resistance* (Routledge, 2001), *Intolerant Britain? Hate, Citizenship and Difference* (Open University Press, 2005), and *The End of Multiculturalism? Terrorism, Integration and Human Rights* (Open University Press). He also co-authored ‘China-focused’ monographs, 'China's Ethical Revolution and Regaining Legitimacy'; and 'Social Policies and Ethnic Conflict in China'.
