The conference takes place every two years and is always a fantastic opportunity for university research staff and students to network, share good-practice, swap ideas and discover each other's research interests. The next UHI Research Conference will be in 2021.
The event was open to all university staff, and especially to those who were already research active or simply interested in developing their own research activity, and postgraduate (research) students. The gives research active colleagues the chance to:
- Attend plenary presentations on national and international 'hot' research issues
- Showcase your research with presentations, poster presentations and training sessions
- Learn about, and engage with, the university’s research clusters
- Receive updates on the latest research developments across the university
- Hear presentations from external speakers
- Network with and meet colleagues from across the university
- Attend information and training workshops and sessions
- Learn about research related systems, policies and processes
- Discover tools to help your research and research practices

There will be general notices provided at several occasions throughout the conference. However, if you require any assistance, please see your colleagues at the registration desk in the first instance. They will do their best to help you.

Opening plenary speaker - Professor Lesley Yellowlees CBE
The opening plenary speaker is Professor Lesley Yellowlees, CBE, FRSE, HonFRSC, chair of SFC RKEC, Professor of Inorganic Electrochemistry (University of Edinburgh), and first female president of the Royal Society of Chemistry 2012-14.
The title of her talk is "From there to here, and what comes next: A personal academic journey and reflections on the potential for researchers in Scottish HEI in the future".

Research Showcase Presentations
Research Showcase Presentations
Presentations will be from any discipline area, and colleagues have been encouraged to incorporate examples of research that are collaborative and that have generated (or have potential to generate) ‘impact’.
Presentations from both staff and students (and especially a combination of the two) are encouraged. Presentations may be made on research projects that are at any stage, i.e. formative through to completed.
There will be 2 research showcase sections in this year’s conference, on Thursday 13 December running from:
9.15 a.m. – 10.15 a.m.
11.45 a.m. – 12.45 p.m.
Each Showcase section will be divided into 4 parallel sessions, and it is expected that there will be an opportunity for 4 presentations in each of those parallel sessions, each of approximately 12-13 minutes, in order to allow a bit of time for Q&As and for changeover of presenters.
Although the showcase sessions have initially been divided thematically, it is intended that the diversity of research across the University should be celebrated, and so the sessions are likely to be of mixed content in several cases.

- Option 3 - OPTION CANCELLED: Mentoring in the University – The Role, Value and Function of Research Mentoring and how this is being supported across the University.
Melanie Smith has sent her apologies for having to cancel the mentoring session but has indicated that she is very happy to speak with any colleagues who may be interested in research mentoring, during tea and coffee breaks, lunch times or dinner.

An important aspect of the conference is the chance for staff and students (individually or together) to present something about the research they have been undertaking. Throughout the conference there will be a display of research posters in the conference main hall, including the opportunity to vote for the best poster with prizes awarded on the final day; voting slips are available from the registration desk.
As with previous years, there will be 2 prizes available for the best staff and student posters, as voted for by conference attendees. The prizes will be awarded at the end of the Conference, in the closing session.
It is hoped that staff and students who are showing posters will be available to answer any questions that delegates may have, during break times, as far as possible. Voting for your favourite poster must be completed and deposited in the voting box/receptacle at the end of the evening on the 12th December, just ahead of the conference dinner.

Professor Neil Simco, UHI VP Research & Impact Session chaired by Michael Rayner, Dean of Research, (note: the session will include some time for Q&As).
These sessions will conclude with a Q&A Panel Session - the panel, comprising the 3 speakers from the morning’s plenaries, will consider questions from the participants; Session chaired by Michael Rayner, Dean of Research.

During the conference there will be an array of information points set out within the main conference hall; these will be staffed by members of the appropriate teams to ensure access to experts in various research support functions.
These include information on electronic library resources, finance office, Pure, Research Professional funding database, and knowledge exchange provisions etc. Please do make a point of visiting the tables and speaking with colleagues who are there.
