New career route into the theatre industry
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) today announced a new route aimed at those looking for a career in the professional theatre industry.
Offered at UHI Perth, the comprehensive skills-led course is the only full degree of this type in Scotland. Created by industry professionals, it offers hands-on training, culminating in live theatre productions and performance opportunities such as traditional theatre production, community theatre, educational workshops, technical installation, and design. Learners will be ready to enter the industry with the appropriate set of skills and abilities to work across different areas of theatre and the performing arts. A range of theatre-based disciplines are taught, including performing, directing, producing, arts tutoring, stage management and technical areas such as lighting and set design.
This progression route will be of interest to students studying on HNC Acting and Performance courses at Ayrshire, City of Glasgow, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh, Glasgow Kelvin and North East of Scotland (NEScol) colleges.
Victoria Rice, UHI’s programme leader for the BA (Hons) Theatre Industry Practice, explained: “We’re delighted to offer this exciting new degree as a progression route to students at the various colleges UHI collaborate with. Students will enjoy guest lecturers and workshops with industry professionals, work placement opportunities within the theatre industry and help set up a real-life production company. Students will chose a specialism within the theatre industry to focus on and expand their knowledge and skills. Modules within the degree programme include, Theatre Industry Fundamentals and Practices, Self-Promotion and Planning and Applied Practice.
“Graduates can find opportunities within theatre management, technical theatre, performance and community theatre, as well as having the option to continue studying on UHI’s PGDE Teaching (Secondary) or MEd Creative Education.”
