Event to explore what inspires music entrepreneurs

While many are familiar with stars of the music industry, less is known about the entrepreneurs behind the scenes. A free discussion in Inverness next month will explore what inspires and challenges the professionals who organise events, promote acts and work to develop the music business in this area.

The Beyond Creativity event, run by the University of the Highlands and Islands, will feature a panel of industry experts.

Joe Gibbs, founder of the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and Rock Ness will be joined by Iain Hamilton, head of creative industries at Highlands and Island Enterprise, Norman Bolton, music development officer at Highland Council and local music promoter and manager, Steve Robertson.

Speaking about the debate, Joe Gibbs said: It's great to see the University of the Highlands and Islands taking the lead in promoting discussion around the topic of contemporary music in the Highlands which forms an increasingly important part of the entrepreneurship and skills base here."

Peter Honeyman, subject network leader for creative and cultural industries at the University, added: "It's vital that our courses reflect the world of work as it really is. Events like this give students and the public an insight into how successful entrepreneurs in the music industry manage to develop their businesses in this harsh economic climate.

"The live music industry in Scotland has been transformed in the last few years by people such as those on the panel, making the Highlands and Islands even more of a destination for cultural tourists and music fans. The music business is well supported by organisations such as Highlands and Islands Enterprise and, of course, the schools play a hugely important role in developing the performers and technicians of the future."
