A fantastic opportunity for 3rd or 4th year engineering students to experience a paid year of work in industry!

UHI has partnered with SSEN Transmission to offer a unique opportunity to students in their 3rd or 4th year of any engineering degree – a year out of their studies (known as a sandwich placement) working in industry, with exposure to several high-profile transmission projects.

About SSEN Transmission:

SSEN Transmission owns and operates the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, transporting energy from where it is generated to where it is needed, providing a safe and reliable supply of electricity to the communities it serves. Home to some of the UK's greatest resources of renewable energy, SSEN Transmission is playing a critical role in the transition to a low carbon future, developing, building, maintaining, and operating a network for net zero.

The role:

They are looking for enthusiastic and innovative candidates with a genuine interest in working at the organisation. If in 3rd year, after the placement, you will return to complete your 4th year of study at UHI. If you apply in 4th year, then you would undertake the placement for one year, potentially as a route to gaining a place on the SSEN graduate scheme.

You will gain a fundamental understanding of HVDC transmission systems including HVDC converters and HVDC cables plus supporting electrical infrastructure through meaningful and challenging technical tasks and project work. You will be supporting HVDC Engineers and HVDC Engineering Managers undertaking a broad range of project design, installation, and commissioning activities. Key details include:

  • Duration: 12 months commencing June 2024
  • Location: Inverness and Highlands – base location to be discussed on an individual basis
  • Salary: circa £23,000

You will be supported with a placement plan, regular line manager meetings, and networking with key business leaders through quarterly placement reviews. You will also have the opportunity to progress to the HVDC graduate programme following a successful year placement, and completion of your final year.
