Professor Ian Bryden
Speaking today, Professor Clive Mulholland, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our colleague Professor Ian Bryden.
“Professor Bryden was a dedicated and much respected member of our team. As vice-principal (research), he played a vital role in developing and implementing the university’s research strategy. He also represented the university’s specialist colleges at a senior level in his capacity as associate principal.
“As well as being an extremely knowledgeable and esteemed academic, Ian was also known for his positive outlook and friendly, approachable manner. We are indebted to him for all he has done in leading our research community and we will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time.”
Professor Bryden joined the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2013. He had over 30 years of research experience in fields associated with energy and hydrodynamics. Before taking up his role with the University of the Highlands and Islands, he was head of the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh. He also held positions at Heriot-Watt University and was head of the School of Mechanical and Offshore Engineering and Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Robert Gordon University.
Professor Bryden was a chartered engineer and a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, The Institution for Mechanical Engineers, the Institute for Marine Engineers, Scientists and Technologists and the Institute for Physics.
