Certified Membership of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT)
CMALT is the accreditation framework of the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). It is targeted at “professionals who are actively involved in understanding, managing, researching, supporting or enabling learning with the use of Learning Technology” (CMALT Accreditation Framework) and provides them with an opportunity for peer-reviewed accreditation and recognition for their skills and experience in the use of Learning Technologies.
There are three different pathways: Associate CMALT, CMALT, Senior CMALT. More information on which pathway would likely be the best fit for you can be found on the CMALT Accreditation Framework page.
To achieve CMALT, candidates will prepare a portfolio containing descriptions of their practice, evidence and critical reflection. The portfolio will be peer-reviewed by current CMALT holders.
CMALT Registration
Registering for CMALT is open to all colleagues in the university who are in a learning and teaching role or learning and teaching related role (including colleagues in professional services who support learning and teaching through the use of technology, for example learning technologists, colleagues in professional development roles and library staff).
For the Academic Year 2023/24, the LTA will fund four application submisisons across the categories of certified membership. Colleagues interested in applying for CMALT can submit a Proposals of Interest which will be considered by an internal selection panel with outcomes communicated to colleagues shortly after.
Successful colleagues will be supported through portfolio writing workshops and mentoring through the ‘Professional Recognition’ strand of the University Mentoring Scheme. In addition to internal support, ALT offer written guidance and optional workshops.
Colleagues selected by the panel will have their initial CMALT registration cost covered by the Learning and Teaching Academy on a reciprocal basis. Upon successful completion of their portfolio, CMALT holders will be expected to mentor future CMALT applicants through the University Mentoring Scheme. In addition, CMALT holders will be responsible for covering the annual CMALT membership fee once membership has been awarded.

Before submitting a proposal of interest, interested colleagues should attend one of the CMALT introduction sessions (dates below). After attending one such session, proposals of interest should be completed and returned to lta@uhi.ac.uk no later than 12:00 on Wednesday 18 October 2023. Colleagues who are selected will begin the CMALT application process with a view of submitting their portfolio to either of the three submission deadlines in 2024.
Seeking Certified Membership of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT): An introduction
This one-hour webinar will provide an overview of the levels of CMALT available and components of the portfolio. The session will also cover the timescales for submitting an application and the support available for participants through CMALT. It is open to anyone considering registering for CMALT.
