Mentoring Development: Defining goals and setting boundaries

In mentoring, mentees might come into the mentoring partnerships with well-defined goals or aims, or they might have quite undefined goals/aims. Therefore, it is important as mentors to take time at the beginning of the partnership to help the mentee define and refine the goals and to consider what is achievable and realistic. Coaching models can help with this task and this short workshop will explore some of these, giving the participants the opportunity to try some out in practice. Participants should come to the workshop with a goal in mind to practice these techniques in one-ton-one break out groups.

Pre-workshop task: Bring a goal with you to the workshop so that you can practice goal setting with another participant. This can be a long-term or short-term goal and it can be work or home related. Although you will be encouraged to share with the wider group how you found using the techniques, you do not have to discuss the goal itself, respecting confidentiality in mentoring is fundamental to all mentoring partnerships.

Although presented as separate workshops, the 4 mentoring workshop sessions are purposely scaffolded to develop mentoring practice and participants are encouraged to attend all where possible.

Alex Walker

Alex is Professional Development and Recognition Lead within the Learning and Teaching Academy at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). Alex coordinates the University Mentoring Scheme, and leads Professional Recognition mentoring including mentoring for HEA Fellowship from Advance HE. This has included mentoring for HEA Fellowships through the university framework ALPINE, through direct applications to Advance HE for PFHEA and internationally through a global funded research project exploring professional recognition and mentoring with colleagues at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB). Alex gained Principal Fellowship HEA from Advance HE in 2021, and recently completed a Masters in Tertiary and Higher Education. An interest in mentoring and digitally enabled approaches to professional development including mentoring has led to a number of invited presentations and publications, the latter including:
