LTA Connect: Going digital in the Creative Arts

Session Outline

UHI has carved out a distinct identity as a learning institution with expertise in using blended and digital approaches to deliver education to its communities; however, the adoption of certain aspects of this approach has been uneven across the University. For example, Art and Drama programmes at Perth and Inverness Colleges, until very recently, have been delivered locally face to face, although there are examples such as the MA Art and Social Practice and the BA (Hons) Applied Music where courses are wholly online. This reflects a deep-seated feeling among some creative arts practitioners and teachers that important experiential, haptic aspects of this subject area cannot be communicated digitally. As a Programme Leader I have been exploring these questions in relation to Drama, and I have redesigned the Drama degree so that it incorporates both face to face and online aspects such as video-conferencing. The impact of Covid 19 has made these questions more urgent than ever and given momentum to the whole question of performing and teaching creative arts in this way.

In this seminar, I will argue against a simple pro or con attitude towards digital teaching methods and suggest that we look for innovative ways of integrating live and digital elements to support our students with learning and creativity.

Presenter Bio

Dr Lesley Mickel is Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Drama and Performance and BA (Hons) Drama and Production at UHI. She has teaching and research interests in both Literature and Drama, and is devising and implementing a research strategy for the School of  Creative Arts at Inverness College UHI as well as being a member of the joint HARC/SILK interdisciplinary research committee. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
