Educational Leadership Symposium

The symposium will explore the nature of educational leadership in the context of professional practice. Co-designed, presented and facilitated with colleagues from across the university, the symposium will include a series of webinar presentations and collaborative activities where presenters and participants will share their knowledge and experiences of their leadership journeys. Through reflective activities, participants will explore and identify strategies to build their leadership awareness, capabilities, and confidence.

Educational Leadership Symposium 28-29 October 2020 Outline programme

Aimed at:

Aimed at those interested in developing their educational leadership practice including understanding leadership awareness and styles, effective leadership behaviours, sources of influence and the value of networks and collaborations.

Presenters

Allane Hay

Allane Hay

Allane is Deputy Head of Academic Partnerships based at Moray College UHI as well as module and programme leader in business and management, teaching among other things responsible leadership and management.  Having achieved Fellowship and recently completed Leadership Programme with Advance HE, she is currently working towards Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Allane is a Master of Science in Leadership and Management and also has Advanced Strategic Management and Responsible Leadership as core in her MBA.  Allane is currently working on a Professional Doctorate with a focus on perceptions of ethical practice in management linked to responsible leadership in SMEs in rural North East Scotland.  As Deputy Head of Academic Partnerships she has a particular role for developing and building partnerships within the university and for the university from Moray, especially linked to business entrepreneurship and enterprise and she has a key role in the development of a business hub for the UHI Enterprise Academy linked to the Moray Growth Deal.  This means working extensively to build relationships with key regional stakeholders, something that is a key focus for responsible leaders.  She is a keen hillwalker, cyclist and Park Run enthusiast and also loves travelling. 

Ann Tilbury

Ann Tilbury

Ann is a member of the university Learning and Teaching Academy (LTA) and leads on a range of professional development opportunities including the university’s engagement with the Advance HE Aurora leadership development programme for women; the embedding of the graduate attributes and the overseeing of the staff development fund.  Prior to joining the LTA Ann worked as the Academic Skills Developer for the Educational Development Unit.  Ann is interested in academic development and leadership theory and practice. She completed a master’s in leadership and Management in 2015 and a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Education in 2016. She is a Chartered member of the CIPD, a Senior Fellow of the HEA and a Fellow of SEDA.  She is a keen runnerroad and mountain bike cyclist. 

Jean Ward

Jean Ward

Jean Ward is the Programme Leader for the MEd Specialist Qualification in Headship and MEd Educational Leadership and is based at Orkney College. Her academic background is in plant science and science teaching. She has considerable leadership experience as Faculty Head in a 3-18 school, Depute Head Teacher in a large secondary, Head Teacher of an island primary and Local Authority Development Officer for Senior Phase and Developing the Young Workforce. She is a Member of the Association for Coaching.  Jean joined UHI in 2016 and became Programme Leader for the MEd Specialist Qualification in Headship and MEd Educational Leadership in 2018 and is a PGDE Secondary Biology Tutor.  Her interests are gardening in all its forms, weaving and walking with her black Lab. 

Scott Connor

Scott Connor

Scott is a member of the university Learning and Teaching Academy (LTA) and leads on Digital and Open Education across the university partnership. Prior to joining the LTA Scott worked as an Educational Development Leader with the Educational Development Unit, leading on and implementing learning and teaching initiatives. Scott is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has studied a variety of disciplines from undergraduate to masters including computing, engineering, criminology, psychology and education and is currently studying for an MEd in Digital Pedagogy. Scott has completed the Jisc Digital Leaders programme and the AdvanceHE Academic Leadership Programme. Scott’s believes that vision, communication and collaboration are key to leadership success. In his spare time he enjoys triathlon and Munro bagging.
