This webinar explored current developments within the education sector concerning the embedding of research-based learning and teaching approaches within the curriculum. Drawing upon a range of examples from different disciplines, and through discussing and exploring examples from our own practice, a key aim of this interactive session was to understand how we can effectively engage students as researchers at all levels of study, and what educational benefits this may bring in terms of engagement, understanding, and the development and sharing of knowledge inside and out with the university. This was an interactive session, offering a blend of presentation, discussion and activity. The webinar concluded with a brief overview of a new university initiative focused on further developing practices in this important area.

Presenters

Michael Rayner is UHI’s first Dean of Research and took up his post in 2010.  He is responsible for a broad range of research-related activities, including all aspects of PGR student/supervisor support (via the UHI Graduate School), and he was institutional lead for the University’s highly successful 2014 REF submission.  He has held posts at the Universities of Strathclyde and Edinburgh, and also a seconded role at the SFC as Assistant Director of Research Policy and Strategy, between 2008 and 2009.  Michael is an expert in the UK research assessment processes and is chair of the Scottish-based REF Managers’ group. He has previously been involved in both national and international research policy developments, and represented Scottish (and broader UK) interests as part of the Bologna Process of European Higher Education reform (Doctoral Programmes Project).

Keith Smyth is Professor of Pedagogy at the university, and leads the Learning and Teaching Academy. Keith works with colleagues across the university on strategic learning and teaching developments, funded projects and supporting staff to engage in educational research. Much of this work is taken forward through the activities of the LTA. Keith has particular interests in co-creative pedagogies and curriculum models, open education, technology-enhanced learning, educational strategy and policy, and developing pedagogic research and scholarship. He has written and presented widely in these areas, and has undertaken funded projects for organisations including the Higher Education Academy, Jisc, Scottish Funding Council and NHS.
