Annual programme report and data
Annual Report 2023/24
The STEM Outreach Programme is a three-year, funded initiative aimed at engaging early years and primary school children in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), while also building confidence and capacity among primary school teachers.
Another key aspect of the programme has been the facilitation of local STEM networks – both geographically, based around our UHI partners, and with communities of interest. This is to ensure information exchange and to support the development of collaborative partnerships that will help plan locally focused STEM activities across the whole of the education journey.

Data & Feedback
Over the past academic year, we have delivered inspiring engagement activities using our bespoke Discovery Kit resources. The topics provided were informed by teacher survey responses.
From September 2023 to February 2025, over 22,500 pre-primary and primary-age children participated in Discovery Kit sessions and other STEM engagement activities delivered by our outreach team. Participation among girls and boys was roughly equal. As well as classroom-based activities, the outreach team also supported around 150 community-based STEM events such as science fairs, festivals, and workshops.
Please note we have a structured methodology for data collection, which is collated quarterly and annually.
