Edward Mowles
Overall student of the Year 2020 winner and further education student of the year
Edward successfully completed the maritime and aquaculture skills course earlier this year and gained work experience in the aquaculture industry with a short employment contract. He has decided to continue his studies at the Mallaig learning centre, having enrolled on an NC shipping and operations course.
Gary Lloyd
Overall higher education student of the year 2020
Gary, who has graduated with a first class BA (Hons) archaeology degree, was the first undergraduate to undertake a placement at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre in East Kilbride - the centre carries out specialist work including radiocarbon dating. His dissertation study, analysing the wear patterns on Iron Age glass beads, has already been put forward for the British Prehistoric Society dissertation prize. Gary is now studying for a masters degree in archaeological studies.
Ashleigh Slater
Postgraduate student of the year
Ashleigh Slater (39) achieved his MA in art and social practice whilst studying through the centre for rural creativity at Shetland College UHI.
Ashleigh’s achievements include the creation of a community based project to explore the heritage of his home town, through a range of creative workshops offering textiles, printmaking, photography and poetry and, in particular, the life work of one of the town’s most famous sons, Hamish Henderson.
