Thorfinn Rosie
Orkney College UHI student of the year
Thorfinn Rosie was awarded Orkney College UHI’s student of the year 2016 for a number of reasons, relating to academic success, personal achievement and also his contribution to the student association. He has also made major contributions to the life of the college whilst representing his fellow students.
Serious illness three years ago meant that Thorfinn could not continue in his previous employment as a joiner in the construction industry, therefore, Thorfinn had to completely re-evaluate his personal situation, especially with regard to employment. He researched the possibilities available to him, then approached the college regarding the HNC Business course. He attended the Open Learning Centre prior to enrolling on the HNC Business in September 2015 and studied ECDL. Thorfinn also attended a Moving into Higher Education course, prior to the HNC Business course, to gain the student skills required for academic learning.
The pro-active approach he has shown when assessing his situation and responding to it is extremely admirable, and his initiative, positive attitude, dedication and quiet determination have been outstanding. He has been an integral part of the initiative to engage students into college life and has helped to contribute towards achieving this aim.
