St Magnus Symposium Now Open for Registration
We are pleased to announce that the next Viking and Early Medieval Studies (VEMS) at UHI Institute for Northern Studies (INS) event will be the St Magnus Symposium which will take place at UHI Perth on Wednesday, October 15th 2025. The theme for the programme of lectures and workshops will be 'Settlement'.
The following programme is confirmed:
- Ragnheiður Traustadóttir (Antikva ehf) ‘Beneath the Landslide: Discovering the Hidden Past of Fjörður. Viking Age Burials and Medieval Settlement in Iceland’,
- Knut Paasche (NIKU) ‘Exploring Viking Ships: Gateways To the Past’,
- David Strachan (Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust) ‘Settlement in Southern Pictland: rural versus royal’,
- Oisin Plumb (UHI/INS/VEMS) A 'New Ireland'? Settlement, identity and the last of the Caledonii’,
- Steve Dickinson ‘Hidden in plain sight?: The Viking Age settlement of the Lake District’,
- Papers from Stephen Harrison (University of Glasgow), Karen Milek (Durham University) and Simon Taylor (University of Glasgow).
The symposium is free and will take place at the Brahan Lecture Theatre at UHI Perth between 11am and 4pm and will also be streamed live online.
