INS Lecturers in Prague to Finalise HerInDep Conference

The Heritage in Depopulated European Areas (HerInDep) project examines how the decline in population in peripheral regions of Europe is leading to the loss of cultural heritage, as well as the abandonment and degradation of buildings and landscapes. It also investigates the impact this decline has on the people living in these areas.

The three-year project is a collaboration between colleagues at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. In the last week of January 2025, Dr. Andrew Lind and Dr. Andrew Jennings from the Institute for Northern Studies travelled to Prague to provide an update on the progress of the Shetland portion of the project. During their presentation, they mentioned that part two of the project—the online survey investigating Shetland residents' views on the importance of their heritage—had received a substantial number of responses.

Additionally, their paper titled "Living on the Edge? – Shetland and the HerInDep Project: An Initial Analysis" has been accepted for publication by the International Journal of Heritage Studies.

At the meeting, the details of the HerInDep project conference, which will  be held in Prague in August, were finalised.
