Dr Andrew Lind Gives Lecture at the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society AGM
‘An ‘Armie of Voluntyres’: The Scottish Royalist Armies under Montrose'
On Saturday 17 May, Dr Andrew Lind, Programme Leader for Early Modern European Studies (MLitt) and Acting Head of Postgraduate Research at the Institute for Northern Studies, gave the lecture at the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society’s annual general meeting, held at the Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh.
The society meets each year in May to commemorate James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, the tireless leader of Scottish Royalist forces during the British Civil Wars (1639-1655). Dr Lind, a longtime member of the society who was elected vice chairman at the AGM, gave a presentation on the armies which Montrose led between 1644 and 1650.
Drawing upon new research contained within the upcoming ‘His Majesty’s Loyal Subjects’: The Scottish Royalist Armies of the British Civil Wars, 1639-1655 (Brill, 2025), co-authored by Dr Lind and Dr Ed Furgol, the lecture offered a fresh analysis of the men who formed the Royalist armies and the challenges they faced. Despite significant logistical struggles, in-fighting and fierce resistance, Montrose led Royalist forces in a series of stunning victories against the Covenanters, remembered by Royalists as the ‘Year of Miracles’ (1644-1645).
Dr Lind’s paper was well-received by the audience of 22 society members who had gathered in Edinburgh for the event.
Dr Lind teaches a module on the topic as part of the Early Modern European Studies MLitt. You can also find out more about the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society by visiting their website.
