What is special about this course?

This CPD Award in palliative and end of life care has been designed to meet the continuous professional development needs of health and social care staff. The content will help to provide and strengthen the knowledge and skills required by staff to provide high-quality care and support to people with palliative and end of life care needs, their families and carers.

The content of the course is based on the NHS Education for Scotland Palliative and End of Life Care Framework at Skilled Level.

The course will be delivered through online learning using the university's virtual learning environment. This type of delivery gives flexible access to study and can, therefore, fit around work and personal commitments.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should have the ability to study at SCQF level 7 (first-year undergraduate level) evidenced either through school qualifications or work-based qualifications such as SVQ2 or SVQ3.
  • Applicants without the above, but with appropriate experience will be considered on an individual basis.

The content of the course covers the following areas:

  • Fundamentals of palliative care
  • Communication and conversations 
  • Loss, grief, and bereavement
  • Care planning and delivery
  • Care in the last days of life

How will I study my course?

  • Part time (structured)
  • You will study through supported online learning using the university's virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • You will receive support from your online tutor

How long will my course last?

  • This module is 200 hours of learning which will be delivered over one academic semester (15 weeks). The course will start annually in late January and early September - subject to minimum numbers.

This course is not available for international students, including EU/EEA and Swiss nationals without settled status in the UK, requiring Student Route visa sponsorship to study here, and cannot be studied outside of the UK.
