What is special about this course?

This CPD Periodontology in Practice module is designed to develop your clinical knowledge and understanding of the role of the dental care professional in managing advanced periodontal disease. It is designed to enhance the student’s approaches to learning and help you to become an investigative learner who is able to critically appraise the evidence-base relating to the treatment of advanced periodontal disease to inform your own clinical practice.

Through reflection in a clinical setting, you will investigate the outcomes of the different approaches to treatment which will benefit all patients in your care.

Entry requirements

  • A relevant degree such as an ordinary or honours degree in oral health science, Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDA), MChD or BChD Dental Surgery, or Diploma in Dental Therapy
  • You must also be working in a clinical setting or have worked clinically within the last 2 years 

 

CPD

You will study:

  • Periodontology in practice

This will comprise:

Disease recognition

  • Aetiology and determinants of advanced periodontal disease
  • Risk assessment for patients with advanced periodontal disease 
  • Identification of the contributing factors to advanced periodontal disease including behavioural, social and medical factors

Treatment

  • Treatment planning
  • Targeted preventive approaches for patients with advanced periodontal disease
  • Evidence-informed approaches to treatment considering risks, benefits, and patient perceptions
  • Practical approaches to treatment in a team model of provision of care, including onward referral
  • Monitoring and evaluation of treatment and maintenance outcomes
  • Addressing success and failure

Reflection

  • Identifying the reflective practitioner
  • Practical reflective tools and practices
  • Evaluation of learning

How will I study my course?

  • Part-time (structured)
  • You will study through supported online learning using the university's virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • The module is delivered over 16 weeks, the final 2 weeks being dedicated to assessment completion

How long will my course last?

  • You will study for one semester (16 weeks) at 20 hours per week

The number of hours per week indicates the total number of hours you should dedicate to the course, which includes time spent in lectures and your own time spent on individual study and research.

Where can I study my course?

  • Inverness

This course is delivered fully online, including video conference lectures and tutorials. You can study from your home location anywhere in the UK. However, you will be enrolled and get support from staff at the above campus.
